Thick, yellow, brittle toenails are often caused by a fungal infection (onychomycosis). It can be stubborn—and many over-the-counter products don’t penetrate the nail well enough to clear it.

How to tell if it’s fungal nails

  • Thickened or crumbly nail

  • Yellow/brown discoloration

  • Debris under the nail

  • Nail lifting from the nail bed

  • Slowly worsening appearance over months

Treatment options

The best treatment depends on severity, how many nails are involved, and your medical history.

  • Topical prescriptions (best for mild cases)

  • Oral antifungals (often most effective; requires medical screening)

  • In-office debridement to reduce thickness and improve penetration

  • Prevention plan to reduce recurrence

How to prevent it from coming back

  • Keep feet dry; change socks after sweating

  • Use antifungal powder/spray in shoes when needed

  • Wear shower shoes in gyms/pools

  • Treat athlete’s foot promptly

  • Disinfect or replace old nail tools
